In a game for the baseball purist, Steve Carlton(13-8) and Dave Goltz(16-15)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Savannah Rumrunners finally emerged
victorious over Denver Dingers, 3 to 1.
Carlton pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 5 and 1/3 innings
surrendering 5 hits and 5 walks. Denver out-hit Savannah 8 to 5, but
Savannah ended up with more runs.
Doug Bird got the save, his 25th. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher
finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Blackbeard Teach said after
the game. 'Carlton did not have command of his pitches most of the
afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'
