Jorge Orta had 2 base hits as the Savannah Rumrunners topped the hopeless
Bristol Blasters by a score of 6 to 4 at Veterans Stadium.
Savannah scored 3 runs in the decisive 7th inning when they came up with 4
base hits. Mickey Rivers started the inning off right when he doubled.
Steve Carlton came next and he ripped a base-hit. Gil Flores then worked the
squeeze play to perfection scoring a run. Andre Dawson followed next and he
doubled plating one more runner. One out later, Orta stepped up to the plate
and he delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning. Carlton(11-6)
got relief help from Doug Bird who was excellent in relief and gained credit
for his 22nd save.
J.R. Richard(11-17) took the loss. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher
finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Blackbeard Teach said after
the game. 'Carlton did not have command of his pitches most of the night,
but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'
