In a good matchup it was the Towanda Black Knights 5, the Bumpass BS 2 at St
Louis Park.
Towanda scored 3 runs in the decisive 3rd inning when they came up with 5 base
hits. Frank Taveras started the inning off right when he doubled. Dennis
Eckersley stepped up next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Rob Andrews
then lined a single knocking in a run. Joe Zdeb was up next and he stroked a
base-hit. Zdeb took second on the throw. Jeff Burroughs came up to bat and
doubled scoring one more run. Lou Piniella contributed to the rally and
banged out a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. That early
run support was enough for Eckersley(3-1) and Towanda. The pitchers took
over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.
Eckersley got relief help from Gary Serum who gained credit for his 1st save.
John Candelaria(1-4) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks
in 5 innings.
'Ahhh, how sweet it is,' Tom Kelly sighed. 'That win feels like a tall, cool
drink of water after spending far too much time in the desert lately.'
