TEAM RISP- Rumrunners: 3 for 11 Royalty: 1 for 7
32,042 fans were treated to a fine game at Wrigley Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Savannah Rumrunners ended a long
winless drought and won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
Savannah jumped on top of Cincinatti in the top of the 3rd inning scoring 2
runs utilizing 3 base hits. Mudcat Grant opened up the inning nicely when he
drew a walk. Floyd Robinson stepped up next and he doubled resulting in a
run. Zoilo Versalles then laced a single. After an out was recorded, Vada
Pinson came to the plate and singled scoring the final run of the inning.
Cincinatti had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Grant(4-2) went 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Grant got
relief help from Tom Morgan who gained credit for his 8th save. Steve
Barber(4-3) was the loser. He allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
'Wow. That's about all I can think to say.' said Savannah's manager following
the victory. 'If ever a team needed a win, it was us.'
