WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Al Smith robbed Bob Allison of an extra base hit.

Center fielder Willie Mays knocked 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Bristol
Blasters staged a dramatic comeback over the Minnesota Loons by a score of 9
to 8 at Memorial Stadium.

Bristol came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Mays led off the inning for Bristol
when he drew a walk. Steve Sustakowski then called for a steal which was
successful. Ernie Banks then lashed a single knocking in a run. Gordy
Coleman stepped in and he was hit by a pitch. Bob Allison was a strikeout
victim, unable to help out. Brooks Robinson continued the rally and laced a
one-base hit scoring one more run. Gus Triandos got his chance to keep
things going, but he went down on strikes. Hal Reniff then uncorked a wild
one that found its way to the backstop scoring the final run of the inning.
Minnesota scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them
from victory.

Hank Aguirre(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2/3 of an inning and
allowing no runs. Clem Labine gained credit for his 1st save. Reniff(0-2)
ended up with the loss in relief.

'Mays led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Aguirre
said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'
